Obituary For Fern H. Zutter

Fern H. Zutter (Nee Bakke), resident of Grande Prairie, AB, was born December 18, 1930, and passed away Sunday, August 24, 2025, at the age of 94 years.

Fern was born to a rural Alberta family, to immigrant parents during the early days of a global depression. She became a teenager as the world was embroiled in a terrible war in which her older brother and her future husband were fighting. Two parents and five children lived together in a tiny farmhouse. It was in this environment that Fern learned the values of hard work and self-sacrifice. It was also where she acquired the skills of friendship, family, and love. She modelled these traits throughout her life as she went from the farm to the town of Rimbey and her first job.

It was in Rimbey that she met the love of her life, Lloyd, and they were married in 1949. A move to Redwater, AB, followed, then Jasper Place, AB, and finally, the family moved to Grande Prairie in 1962. This became the family home for the rest of Fern’s life.

Throughout her life, Fern acquired lifelong friends amongst her neighbours and their families, her colleagues at work (especially at Warrington’s), her UCW group, her extended family of nieces and nephews, as well as the families and friends of her children. Many people have expressed how much they appreciated her kind nature and willingness to listen and care for their concerns, over tea or while walking (especially in the rain).

Fern will be sadly missed by her many friends and by her children, Kevin (Sandra), Randy (Donna), and Deanna (Don). She was a much-loved grandma to Candice (Carey), Morgan (Ricki), Elizabeth, James (Nina), and Andrea. A great-grandma to Brianna, Josh, Carter, and Cooper, GG Zutter to Oakleigh, and great-great-grandma to Halle.

Fern was predeceased by her parents, Christian and Eliza Bakke; her siblings Carl, Norine, Mildred, and Gladys; her loving husband, Lloyd; and her daughter-in-law Joyce.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, September 19, at St. Paul’s United Church (10206 100 Ave.) in Grande Prairie, AB.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Grande Prairie Care Centre for the care and support provided to Fern over her final years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul’s United Church in Grande Prairie (https://stpaulsuc.ca/index.php/donate/) or the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation in Edmonton (https://www.stollerykids.com/donate/).

Condolences

  • September 08, 2025

Our condolences to the Zutter family. We had many, many great memories living across the street from the Zutter's. Fern was a lady in every sense of the word. Tea was always served in a fine bone China tea cup. We shared recipes/ remedies/ ideas and great conversation - sometimes on the front step in our housecoats. A trip to Ontario and Horseheads New York was enjoyed after Fern retired from Warrington's. There were times of laughter and times of tears. She was a homemaker and a great cook. She was a blessing in our lives. She was like a mother to me and a grandmother to our children. The angels came and took you home to where there is on pain. God bless you and keep you Fern. - Kerry Chmilar and family
