Obituary For Ella "Doris" Sorensen

Doris passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, at the age of 92 years.

She was born at the Grace Hospital in Calgary, AB, to Danish immigrant parents, Hjalmar and Sigrid Stoyberg. She was a beloved sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunty, and friend.

Doris has been involved with farming her whole life. She later worked as a Justice of the Peace and a deputy court clerk in Grande Prairie before retiring at 65 years of age in 1995.

Doris’s passion has always been her horses, but her greatest joy was teaching her grandkids about horses. Doris was a teacher! She would ride with anyone who had the time, but she was most passionate about teaching her grandkids and anyone who was interested in the finer points of riding horses or competing in horse shows. She supported her families in their many efforts in the ring, and they were successful in most competitions they entered.

She loved the Danish culture and cooking, especially the Danish Smorgasbord. She loved her garden, picking berries, pickling, and quilting. She brought warmth to every room she ever entered. She was loved and respected by everyone. She will be missed and lovingly remembered forever!

She is survived by her younger sister Tova (Dewey) Lodewyk; younger brother Brian (Donna) Stoyberg; sons: Kim (Marnie) Sorensen, Danny (Gayle) Sorensen, Perry Sorensen and son in law, Ken Norman; grandchildren: Erica (Matt) Crowther, Lief (Emily) Sorensen, Axel (Heather) Sorensen, Christopher (Melissa) Sorensen, Jodie (Joe) Atkinson, Stacy (Liam) Cosgrove, Sasha (Randy) Dorscheid, Danica (Jared) Friesen, Ryan Sorensen, Taylor Sorensen, and Christian Sorensen; as well as 17 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her daughter Devonne Catherine Norman; younger sister Dagny Johnston; husband Walter Johnston; as well as younger brother Elmer and his wife Elsey Stoyberg.

Our family would like to acknowledge the incredible care Doris received from Dr. Pope, the staff at the Mackenzie Place Care Facility, and the Nurses at the emergency department at the new Grande Prairie Regional Hospital. My mom would want us to pass on her heartfelt thank you to all of them.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 28, 2022, at 2:00pm. at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave.).

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice in Doris’ name.

Sending condolences 💐 to the family, I had the pleasure of knowing Doris briefly while I worked at Mackenzie place, she was a wise lady, whom loved to talk about horses and her family. She loved going for walks and enjoyed her morning coffee❤️ She was so proud of all of her children, she'd tell stories of them all the time, pointing out their photos one by one on the wall. Making sure you knew which one she meant. For example, She always referred to Perry as the one who worked the pipeline! there was the one time she was excited her son was coming to see her on his "3 wheeler motorcycle" (his spyder) I luckily was able to see her off with him, for a ride which I helped capture a photo of for their memories !!!! She will be forever embedded in my memory, as the last time I had seen her she informed me, how much she truly cared about my passion for my job, that she was proud to see younger people still caring about society. She stressed it to me, that I'd be deeply missed when I was moving back east just this past September. Little did I know that's be the last time I'd ever get to see her!!! May you rest easy Doris. You're with your daughter now, hopefully you both are riding the most enchanting horses that there ever were ❤️❤️❤️❤️
