We offer families the opportunity to prepare and submit obituary notices written in their own words. We believe this allows each tribute to authentically reflect the life and legacy of the individual. To honour each tribute, obituaries are published as approved by the family.

Obituary For Elizabeth "Mae" Howell

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Elizabeth “Mae” Howell, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, formerly of Spirit River, AB, on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at the age of 94 years. She passed at Mackenzie Place in Grande Prairie with family by her side.

Mom was born on October 31, 1931, to Lawson and Mickey Scott. She grew up in an era that created her incredible resilience and strong will. There was nothing Mom couldn’t do once she put her mind to it. Mom moved to Grande Prairie in 1949, where she became a telephone operator. She met the love of her life, Harry Howell, and they were married on December 1, 1951. Together, they built a life and a legacy on the farm in Whitburn, AB. There, they raised their five children: Edward (Mary), Gordon (Brenda), Bonnie (Ed), Marianne (Luc), and Kathy (Mark).

Mom was the cornerstone of our family. Her convictions were steadfast, and she was a fierce protector of all she loved, whether it was family, friends, or animals. Mom was a wonderful cook and an excellent baker. She loved to sew and made many clothes for us. She began quilting and loved making many beautiful quilts for family and friends. She also loved to knit and spent many hours knitting sweaters and socks.

Mom was our rock, our cheerleader, and confidante. She taught us that if you do a job right the first time, you don’t have to start over. Mom was a true farmer at heart and loved all her animals. She was an exceptional gardener and always had a big garden with lots of vegetables and fruit. Her flower gardens were always a joy for her.

In addition to her five children and their spouses, Mom is also dearly missed by seven grandchildren, Trevor (Danica), Ryan (Hannah), Travis, Tyler (Melissa), Ashley (Jonathan), Anna (John), and Emelia (Mat); nine great-grandchildren, Pearson, Alexandra, Brixton, Harper, Camden, Tate, Annette, Quinn, and Reid; a special niece, Peggy Fischer; and a special “adopted” daughter, Merle MacGillivray.

She was predeceased by her parents, Lawson and Mickey Scott, and her beloved husband, Harry.

Mom spent her last years at Mackenzie Place in Grande Prairie. We would like to thank all the staff, as well as Dr. Añez and Dr. Cele, for their great care.

Memorial donations may be made to the Bandaged Paws Animal Rescue Association (https://bandagedpaws.org/donate) or to a charity of one’s choice.

Condolences

Sending sincere condolences to Mae's family and friends. Mae's was my Mom's, Nettie Letersky, good friend and was a steady presence in my life. We loved going to the farm to visit and enjoy the "petting zoo". There was always fresh eggs and cream to take home. Such great memories! I hope someone brings "Mae's Howell's famous chocolate cake" to celebrate her life. ❤️
