Obituary For Edward Karl Redekopp

In loving memory of Edward Redekopp, born on January 10, 1925, in Central, Prov. of Ekaterinoslav, Russia, who passed away on December 22, 2025, in Hythe, Alberta, at the age of 100 years.

Beloved husband to Elizabeth for 72 years; father to Dale Redekopp, Linda Willms, Allan Redekopp, Karen Schoepp (Nathan), Kenny Redekopp, and Joyce Crilly (Paul); grandfather to Kelsey, Randi, Heidi, Jesse, Kyle, Morgan, Madison, Julianne, Joshua, Ethan, and Kollyann; and great-grandfather of 17 children.

Dad was born in Russia, which is now the Ukraine, and immigrated to Canada with his parents at the age of one. They settled in southern Alberta, and he lived and worked on the family farm but was always fascinated by radios. After marrying Elizabeth in 1951, they moved to Lethbridge, and he began his career in the field of electronics.

Dad and Mom lived in their Lethbridge home for 57 years. They enjoyed travelling to Arizona during the winter in their older motorhome and even took it across Canada from the Queen Charlottes to Newfoundland. They often reminisced about these times.

Dad worked until he was 95 years old, fixing antique TVs, tube radios, and amplifiers. He regularly shared his knowledge of these, as he had become quite an expert in that field. The tube collection in his garage shop was huge. He enjoyed the many people he met and the challenge of bringing their antiques back to life. He loved electronics and was one of the first people to have a ham radio. That was in the 1950s. We remember him talking to people all over the world, starting with, “This is VE6ZS and the handle is Ed.”

Photography was another of his many passions. His trusty Zeiss Ikon captured many a family photo. He also taught an evening photography course at the Lethbridge Community College. Dad was a checkers champion in several states and also played chess, competing across North America. At 100 years old, he would still beat many of us at chess.

He had an incredible memory, and not long ago, he would tell us the names of the German prisoners of war that he worked with in a logging camp before he was married. He had many stories, and the details were all there. He had his driver’s licence and drove safely until he was 98. When they moved to Sherwood Park, he felt it was best to give it up, as he didn’t know the streets well enough.

We would like to thank Wendy and Janet for their kindness and time spent with Dad—watching sports and Jeopardy, listening to Paul Harvey (“G’Day”), and doing lots of trivia research. Dad was sharp right to the end and greatly enjoyed visiting with you both.

Dad loved to sing hymns, and his most requested was “Rock of Ages.” We all spent many hours with Mom and Dad, singing or listening to hymns.

Thank you to Prairie Lake and Pearson Place for providing excellent care and showing true compassion to our father. We often witnessed your sensitivity, respect, and gentleness toward him.

A private family interment will be held on Friday, January 2, 2026, at Poplar Hill Cemetery.
