Obituary For Dusty Lane LaValley
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dusty Lane LaValley on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at the age of 45.
Born on May 30, 1981, in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Dusty lived a life defined by determination, hard work, adventure, and an unwavering love for his family. Whether he was in the rodeo arena, on the river, in the bush, cruising in his car, also known as “Goose,” or surrounded by those he loved, he embraced every day with passion, courage, and a contagious sense of humor.
In 2022, Dusty faced the greatest challenge of his life when he was diagnosed with ALS. He met the disease with the same grit and determination that had carried him through every challenge before it. Although ALS changed his life, it never changed the man he was—a man whose strength, positivity, and love for others continued to shine through.
Dusty’s passion for rodeo began at just 14 years old when he climbed a horse named Detour at the Cranberry Lake Rodeo. That first ride sparked a remarkable career that would make him one of Canada’s most accomplished bareback riders. Through years of dedication and perseverance, Dusty celebrated countless milestones, including qualifying for his first Canadian Finals Rodeo in 2003 and being named the PRCA Resistol Rookie of the Year in 2004. He became a four-time Canadian Bareback Champion, winning the Canadian Finals Rodeo Bareback Championship in 2006, 2007, 2010, and 2011. He was also a two-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier, finishing 3rd in the average in 2008 and 4th in 2009. In 2022, Dusty was proudly inducted into the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, cementing his place as one of the best bareback riders to come out of Canada. While these accomplishments speak to his incredible talent, they represent only a portion of a career that inspired fellow competitors and rodeo fans across North America.
Years later, Dusty came full circle when he climbed aboard one last time on November 23, 2019, for Canada’s Energy Citizens’ “Grey Cup Rodeo.” This was not for another title, but simply for the love of the sport that had always been a part of who he was.
Above all else, Dusty was a devoted father to Austin and Vienna, who were the greatest pride and joy of his life. Everything he did was driven by the love he had for his children. He was a loving son, a cherished brother, and a playful uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend. His family meant everything to him, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
Outside of rodeo, Dusty and his brother, Trevor, founded Trusted Dispatch in 2015, building a respected business rooted in honesty, integrity, and hard work. Beyond his entrepreneurial spirit, Dusty was an avid outdoorsman who found peace in hunting, fishing, trapping, river boating, and quadding.
Anyone who knew Dusty knew his larger-than-life personality. He was a natural storyteller, a huge goofball who loved to joke around and play pranks. He had a way of making people laugh on their hardest days and even through his own toughest days. His kindness, generosity, and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He had a way of making people feel welcome, valued, and like lifelong friends.
Dusty’s legacy is not only found in the championships he won or the records he set, but also in the countless lives he touched through his friendship, mentorship, laughter, and unwavering spirit. His courage, strength, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Though his ride ended far too soon, the lessons he taught, the memories he created, and the love he shared will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Dusty will be sadly missed by his children, Austin and Vienna LaValley; his parents, Bernice and Grant LaValley; his siblings, Laura (Todd), Trevor, and Amanda (Chad); and his nieces and nephews, Wyatt (Tatum), Telsa (Rylon), Dustin (Raven), Shaelyn, Jace (Madison), Jessica, Dallas, Sadie (Koby), Dawson, Presley, Skyler, and Fallon. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.
Dusty was predeceased by his grandparents, Tony and Frances Doll, and Roger and Emily LaValley.
A celebration of Dusty’s life will be held on Friday, August 28, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Bezanson Community Event Centre (9901 100 Ave, Bezanson, Alberta), with a luncheon to follow. Afterward, interment will be held at the Glen Leslie Cemetery (Range Rd 40, Bezanson, Alberta).
Family and friends are invited to join together to celebrate Dusty’s life, share stories, and honor a remarkable father, cowboy, son, brother, uncle, and friend whose legacy will never be forgotten.
For those who cannot attend in person, the service will be livestreamed. The link will be available shortly before the service begins.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honour Dusty’s memory may make a contribution toward his children, Austin and Vienna, and their future. If you choose, you can send these donations to dusty.family.fund@gmail.com. The family is deeply grateful for the love, kindness, and support shown during this difficult time.
Forever loved. Forever remembered. Forever missed.
