We offer families the opportunity to prepare and submit obituary notices written in their own words. We believe this allows each tribute to authentically reflect the life and legacy of the individual. To honour each tribute, obituaries are published as approved by the family.

Obituary For Dr. Norman James Enns
Dr. Norman James Enns passed away Monday, June 8, 2026 at the Mel Miller Hospice in Edmonton, Alberta, surrounded by family. Norm, as most knew him, was born in 1938 at SW ¼ Sec. 5-3-4W, Winkler, Manitoba. He was the second oldest of six siblings and grew up helping on his family's dairy farm.
After completing high school, Norm went to teacher's college, but soon realized his calling was
elsewhere. Always determined to forge his own path and think for himself, Norm defied what
were then strict cultural expectations and decided to pursue dentistry. He graduated from the
University of Alberta in 1969, marking the beginning of a career that would span more than 40
years. Nearly 30 of those years were spent at his private practice in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
In 2000, Norm retired from his private practice and returned to Edmonton to the community of
Lansdowne, where he had built foundations for houses as a stone mason's apprentice while
completing his university studies. This event, like other milestones in his life, spoke to his principled character; he asserted he would live in one of the homes he helped build, and he did.
Norm was a dedicated individual and his first retirement was short-lived. In fact, he returned to
his profession twice before his health required him to finally retire at age 75. In retirement, he
tried his hand at wood-working, and while his health eventually prevented him from sustaining
this hobby, the pieces he skillfully crafted continue to serve their fortunate recipients.
After undergoing treatment for kidney disease for almost two years, Norm left the world
peacefully. If anything, he may have just closed his eyes so he could hear what people were saying
about him—a habit that kept everyone on their toes. He can rest assured his name comes up
fondly in conversation.
Norm is lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Darlene Enns (née Loewen); his two
daughters, Candace and Charmaine (m. Kemppi); their partners, Ken and Tom; three
grandchildren, Zoë, Esa, and Theo Kemppi; five siblings; and countless other relatives, friends,
colleagues, and acquaintances whose lives he touched.
In lieu of flowers, and in gratitude to the staff and facilities at the Mel Miller Hospice, the family
requests donations be made to the Covenant Foundation (https://covenantfoundation.akaraisin.com/ui/DonateNow to Palliative Care).
A celebration of Norm's life will be held August 20, 2026 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at the Lansdowne
Community League. Friends and family are invited to come and go at their leisure.
