Obituary For Doug Harper

Doug Harper, born June 19, 1948 and resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away surrounded by family on May 11, 2015 at the QEII Hospital, at the age of 66 years. Doug was born in Edmonton to Earl and Joan Harper. His father was in the Air Force and as a result, he and his family moved 28 times to 16 different locations around North America. In 1963, following the untimely death of his father, Doug, along with his family, returned to live in Maple Ridge, BC. Following high school, he embarked on a career in the RCMP, which saw him posted to several Alberta locations. In 1971, he met and married Lois and they were blessed with the birth of two sons Graham and Nathan. While in the Force, Doug pursued a University degree in Education. In 1997, following retirement from the Force, he taught Work Force Development courses at Grande Prairie Regional College, and pursued hobbies of woodworking and building scale model airplanes. Doug had a passion for sports and excelled as an athlete, mentor, volunteer, and coach. His focus in coaching was always about learning the basic skills in a particular discipline and less about the aspect of winning. Doug loved being a Grandpa and was able to share quality time with each of his seven grandchildren. Although his life was cut short by illness, he and Lois were able to spend time at their cabin in BC and travel. Doug will be sadly missed by his wife of 43 years, Lois, his son Graham (Jackie) and grandchildren Rylee, Mckinley and Kali; son Nathan (Corry) and grandchildren Rogan, Kensingtyn, Linley and Maklyn; sister Leslie Hawk; step-father Gordon Neal; step-sisters Wendy and Brenda. Doug was predeceased by his mother Joan and father Earle, infant brother Lorne and step-father Gordon Byrnell. Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 2:00pm at the Teresa Sargent Hall – Montrose Cultural Centre in Grande Prairie (9839 103 Ave.). Please note access and parking will be on the south side of the building. If desired, memorial donations in Doug’s memory may be made on online (www.kidsportcanada.ca) or by mail to Kidsport Grande Prairie Chapter (P.O. Box 851 Grande Prairie, AB T8V 3R5).
