Obituary For Dorothy Johanna Hegland

Dorothy Johanna Hegland, 96, of Beaverlodge, Alberta, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2025.

Dorothy was born on March 18, 1929, in Sexsmith, Alberta, to Joseph and Matilda Farnsworth. The youngest of ten siblings, she grew up in the Bay Tree area. After completing her schooling, Dorothy worked in Edmonton before moving to Beaverlodge, where she met Olaf (“Ole”) Hegland. They married on October 20, 1947, and together raised four children: David, Ivan, Marie, and Mervin.

Dorothy and Ole worked tirelessly to build a life on the family farm, often taking on winter jobs to keep things going. Dorothy was never afraid of hard work and worked alongside Ole on the railway and in logging camps. They always worked together to build the farm life they loved. Dorothy was a huge supporter of any of her family’s endeavors, always willing to lend a helping hand.

She was deeply involved in her community, contributing to organizations such as Riverside Ladies Aid, Beaverlodge Alliance Church, and the Albright Community Hall. Dorothy played a key role in organizing community suppers and loved bringing people together. She had a passion for music and dancing and rarely missed a chance to join in.

Dorothy’s family was her greatest joy. She was an excellent seamstress, creating clothing for her grandchildren. Every grandchild and great-grandchild received a quilt lovingly made by her. She cherished family connections, kept meticulous photo albums, and documented family genealogy to preserve history for future generations.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son David (Janet) Hegland and grandchildren Michael (Laura) Hegland and Gayle (Michael) Martin; son Ivan (Sadie) Hegland and granddaughter Tatum (Nathan) Doris; daughter Marie (Don) Fletcher and grandchildren Mark (Brenda) Fletcher, Boyd (Esther) Fletcher, Robin (Shannon) Fletcher, and April (Matt) Smith; and son Mervin (Joan) Hegland and grandchildren Sarah (Travis) White, Amy Hegland, and Andrew (Crystal) Hegland. Dorothy so loved her children, grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She will also be deeply missed by numerous relatives, neighbours, and friends.

Dorothy was predeceased by her loving husband, Olaf Hegland, and her parents, Joseph and Matilda Farnsworth. She was the last surviving sibling of ten brothers and sisters.

The family would like to thank all the people that provided exceptional care to Dorothy at the Hythe Pioneer Home and at the Beaverlodge Hospital.

Dorothy’s funeral service will be held on Friday, January 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave), with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Following the service, friends are invited to join the family for a luncheon in Oliver’s Tea Room. Interment will follow at Gimle Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dorothy’s memory to the Beaverlodge Hospital Foundation (www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/beaverlodge-hospital-foundation / Box 480, Beaverlodge, AB T0H 0C0) or Gimle Public Cemetery (c/o Box 667, Beaverlodge, AB T0H 0C0).

My deepest condolences to the family, Auntie Dorothy always had a way of making me feel special every time I spoke with her.

One of Dorothy's talents was making beautiful quilts. I am pretty sure a lot of stories and a lot of heart went in to every one. And with that same love and dedication, she herself formed one of the strongest and brightest threads in the fabric of our community. A big hole in that fabric is left in her passing. Condolences to the family
