Obituary For Doris Edith Smith

Doris Smith, resident of Beaverlodge, AB, passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at the age of 94 years.

Doris was born on May 22, 1928, at home to Wesley McNeil and Blanche (nee Elder) McNeil in Coronach, SK. The family moved to the Peace Country in 1937 when she was nine. They settled on rented land in the Halcourt area and then a few years later the family established their farm in the Rio Grande area. Doris attended a few country schools - Appleton being her favourite. She completed High School in Beaverlodge, AB, and then went on to Alberta College in Edmonton, AB, in 1949, attaining a Secretarial Diploma.

Doris met the love of her life Joseph “Joe” Smith of the Hinton Trail area - they were a match made in heaven. They were married October 16, 1950. Doris and Joe raised their 4 children on the farm west of Beaverlodge: Dwight 1955, Carol 1958, Ione 1963, and Sharon 1970. She was fun loving, had a great sense of humour, and was devoted to her family.

She will be fondly remembered by her children: Dwight (Jeanne) Smith, Carol (Greg) Seaman, Ione (Jack) O’Connell, and Sharon Beks; 12 grandkids who loved and cherished their Grandma Smith: Clint (Lorinda) Smith, Clark (Jessica) Smith, Dean (Amber) Smith, Donny (Shenda) Smith, Cally Jo (Rory) Tarant, Morgan (Jesse) O’Connell, Matthew (Taylor) O’Connell, Bradon O’Connell, Brandi (Masen) Jones, Samantha Beks (Mike Maloney), Sarah Beks, and Patrick Beks; as well as many great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.

Doris was predeceased by husband Joseph Smith; siblings Ralph McNeil, Irene (nee McNeil) Stachera, and Edgar McNeil.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 27, 2023, at 2:00pm, at Beaverlodge Alliance Church (409 10 St). Interment to follow at Halcourt Cemetery. Family and friends are welcome to join the family for fellowship and lunch at Alliance Church after graveside service.

Ione and Family, I'm sorry to hear of the passing of your mom. My brother Dave messaged me this morning and sent a link to your mom's obituary. May all the lovely memories you have of time spent with your mom sustain you during this time. I always enjoyed visiting with your mom. She was special. She is now reunited with her beloved Joe, and all her siblings as well as her mom and dad. Blessings, Arlie Melnyk(Stachera)
