We offer families the opportunity to prepare and submit obituary notices written in their own words. We believe this allows each tribute to authentically reflect the life and legacy of the individual. To honour each tribute, obituaries are published as approved by the family.

Obituary For David Grant Sarmaga

David Grant Sarmaga, born on November 24, 1950, in Grande Prairie, Alberta, passed away on March 23, 2026, in Ladysmith, British Columbia.

Grant was a devoted father to Daron Sarmaga (Noelle) and Jeremy Sarmaga, and a proud grandfather to Ivory Sarmaga.

He is lovingly remembered by his siblings, Maxine Maxwell (David), Donna Bedard, Gene Sarmaga (Karen) and Audrey Curran (Rick), as well as their children, his nieces and nephews. Grant is also survived by his long-time friend, Hank, from Bella Coola, B.C. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Sadie (née Gaboury) Sarmaga, both sets of grandparents and all of his Sarmaga and Gaboury aunts and uncles.

Grant was an avid outdoorsman and a master tinkerer who found joy in working with his hands, crafting beautifully finished bookshelves, cabinets and a number of strip canoes. He enjoyed spending time in nature along the banks of the Smoky River.

He was especially proud of the off-grid home he developed on his quarter, largely by clearing out a spacious yard in the bush and using mostly recycled materials for the buildings.

Grant will be remembered at a family gathering on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Glen Leslie Cemetery (Range Rd 40, Bezanson, AB), where his ashes will be interred.
