We offer families the opportunity to prepare and submit obituary notices written in their own words. We believe this allows each tribute to authentically reflect the life and legacy of the individual. To honour each tribute, obituaries are published as approved by the family.

Obituary For Carol Ann Thomson
Carol Ann Thomson (Wardill) was born in Grande Prairie, AB, on May 11, 1950. She died in Grande Prairie on Saturday, May 16, 2026.
During the last few years, Mom struggled with her health. She continued to get out and about for coffee dates with her sister, Diane, and friends, Marie and Betty-Mae. There have been many friends that joined the coffee group at the north-end McDonalds over the years.
Mom moved into the Lexington apartments a couple of years ago, and she had been forming some pretty great friendships with the “Lexington Ladies,” as she called them. Coffee, puzzles and exchanging favors; we, her daughters, were happy to know she was finding a family where she lived.
Carol married Buck on August 11, 1967. In the 28 years they were married, they raised three pretty great kids, Rhonda, Roxanne and Peggy. In September of 1995, we lost Dad, and Mom lost the person who idolized her and often credited her with “saving” him. We are quite sure that Mom had never imagined being a widow at 45 years old.
Mom stayed involved with Al-Anon, sharing her experiences to help others, and making many close friends along the way.
Anyone who knew Mom and Dad knew how much they loved and respected each other. This is not to say it was always perfect, but they loved and respected each other through good times and bad. They complemented each other and provided a good example for us kids and our kiddos that followed.
Mom had five grandchildren: Matthew, Danielle, Alexandra, Calcifer and Savannah. She had different relationships with all of them, all uniquely their own.
Mom grew up with three siblings: Joan, Diane and Ray. It was always fun to sit around with them and watch how they interacted with each other. The three girls, especially, did much giggling while teasing their brother, Ray, Dad, Jim, and even us. We have missed the campfires, the singing along, and the stories shared. They had something special, and we know they still will; they’re just missing one of their crew now.
The ones not quite dead yet (if you know, you know): Rhonda Thomson, Roxanne (Randy) Gulick, Peggy Thomson, Matthew Reichert (Michelle), and Danielle Thomson; the Gulick girls, Alexandra, Calcifer and Savannah; Joan (Jim) Loewen, Diane Wardill (Duane Atkinson), and Ray Wardill (Debbie); and the outlaws: Louise Thomson, Edith (Gordon) Schoepp, and Scott (Judy) Thomson.
There are many nieces and nephews who loved their Auntie Carol, as well as many friends and extended family who Mom knew and remembered, because she always connected who everyone was with her genealogical mind.
Those who left us before she did: Buck; her parents, Tom and Lydia Wardill; sister-in-law, Laurie Wardill; Dad’s parents, Jock and Olive Thomson; along with Dad’s siblings, Jimmy Thomson, Margaret and Lawrence Peterson, and Anne Thomson.
Donations to the Northwestern Alberta Foundation in Carol’s name would be appreciated if you are moved to do so. Our goal is to set up a fund in memory of Buck and Carol Thomson. This charitable foundation has the ability to grant funds to a variety of causes. Because Mom and Dad grew up in Northwestern Alberta, we felt this fund could help folks from many walks of life where they lived, loved and contributed (https://cfna.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create/fund?funit_id=1081).
This is the short version. Please feel free to come join us and hear the long-winded version at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005-107 Ave) on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. for a celebration of Carol’s life. A light lunch will be provided afterwards.

She was a fine lady. When I was in the process of getting sober & for years after I managed to make it stick, it did not matter how low or how sick I was, Carol & Marie always managed to make me feel like I was worth something. And some days that was all that kept me going. The world is already a little less bright without her.
