Obituary For Bruce Gordon Mastervick
With great sadness, we announce the passing of my dad, Bruce Gordon Mastervick. Bruce passed away peacefully at the Central Peace Health Complex on Friday, June 27, 2025, at the age of 76.
Bruce was born on July 10th, 1948, in Newport, Ontario to Jack and Eerie Mastervick. He was the brother to Thomas, Margaret, Douglas, and Dennis. After the death of his mother at the age of 16, he courageously hitchhiked across the country to Alberta. He began in a small town named Botha, Alberta. Bruce fell in love with the land and people, and remained in central Alberta for the next 17 years. During these years, he married Debbie Reynolds (1972), and had two children, Amanda and Mark. Bruce’s hobbies at this time were horse riding, baseball, and hockey. Family and friends all have fond memories of his great dancing, whether it be a two-step, polka or old-time waltz. He worked at various jobs - farming, trucking and as a mechanic, making him a jack of all trades.
In 1981, a major shift in the economy forced the family to move north, where Bruce obtained his Journeyman Automotive Mechanic Certificate. Here he became an avid outdoorsman - fishing, hunting, camping, boating, sledding, and gold panning. He even tried his hand at wine making. As kids on the school bus, we bartered smoked fish or moose jerky in our lunches for treats.
A temporary family move to Edmonton in 1987 led him to start long haul trucking. Dad really enjoyed the scenery and all of the people he had met along the way. Dad had some pretty interesting stories to tell us kids when he returned home. Relocating to Tumbler Ridge in 1990 put the family back in the outdoors, where he was the town foreman and took pride in taking care of the town. He never missed the opportunity to take in an evening of fishing or gold panning.
The move to Rycroft, Alberta brought some challenges to our family. After the loss of my brother Mark in 1997, Dad returned to long haul trucking, as well as to his passion of fishing and gold panning. For all who knew him, that’s what he needed, even though we didn’t understand at the time.
Dad was a gentle and kind man, with a great sense of humor and delivered witty one-liners at the drop of a hat! He was a skillful man, whom according to Mark, could fix anything. Everywhere we lived, he made great friends and had many adventures. He always could put a smile on anyone’s face.
Bruce is survived by daughter Amanda (Brian) Markovich, grandchildren Courtney (Brody) McMurphy, Spencer (Georgia) Markovich, Chariti (Shaye) Kristoff, and great-granddaughter Tessa.
He was predeceased by his parents Jack and Eerie, stepmother Jean, siblings Thomas, Margaret, Douglas, Dennis, and son Mark.
After many years of battling with health issues, Dad, I am so very grateful I was able to be by your side, as your pain has now stopped and you can finally rest. I appreciate the many skills you have taught me which I still treasure to this day. The adventures and memories we have had will always live on within me.
Dad’s request was to not have a funeral; he will be laid to rest with his son.
