Obituary For Bozena "Bo" Cerny (nee Prajerova)
Bozena “Bo” Cerny (nee Prajerova) of Valhalla, Alberta was born to parents Frank and Bozena in the town of Trisov Czechoslovakia on September 24, 1960. She was the middle child in a family of three, with her older brother Frank and younger sister Zdenka.
Growing up in a small village, Bo enjoyed spending time with her family. Her fondest memories were with her father and grandfather where she would spend time gardening, mushroom picking, playing live music and fishing. She loved going for rides on her dad’s motorbike.
In school she was a decorated track star and in her village, she was something of a celebrity for consistently beating the toughest men in the local firefighting competitions.
One day a young man went wandering by her house and soon after she met Pavel, the man she would marry in 1978 and with whom she spent the next 47 years. Their family grew in 1980 when their daughter Lenka was born. When she was only 9 months old, they fled Czechoslovakia and eventually made their way to Canada where they landed in Calgary, Alberta. In 1989 they welcomed their second child, a son named David. And their family was complete.
In 1995 the family moved to the Peace Country and would finally settle in Valhalla. Here they led a simple life filled with many of the same hobbies as Bo enjoyed back home. Bo would find work at a dental lab in Grande Prairie and when her daughter Lenka became sick, she was her primary caretaker up until her passing.
Bo was the perfect mix of strong and soft, bold and quiet, down to earth and classy. She is best described in the quote “I don’t want to be strong like man who look pretty, I want to be strong like woman who fights bear in forest”.
Bo loved her garden, curling, reading a good book and having a great glass of wine. But the thing she loved and cherished the most were the people that she surrounded herself with. Bo was a fiercely loyal friend and loved her family dearly.
In 2018 she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer which she fought until her passing on April 13, 2025 at Beaverlodge Hospital, surrounded by her family. She will be dearly missed by her husband Pavel, her son David, her siblings, extended family and all who were privileged to know her.
She was predeceased by her daughter Lenka and her parents.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 10:00 am at Oliver’s Funeral Home (10005 107 Ave Grande Prairie)
In lieu of flowers, any donations can be made to the Hythe Thrift Store or the Beaverlodge Curling Club, two local groups that were dear to her heart.
