Obituary For Bernard L'Hirondelle

Bernard L’Hirondelle, a resident of Grande Prairie, Alberta, passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at the age of 82 years.

Bernard was born in Edmonton and raised in Milk River, Alberta, where he learned the value of hard work early in life. In the 60s, he moved to Grande Prairie, where he met Susan. The two quickly fell in love and had four children together, sharing nearly 60 years of marriage. After working in the oil patch, he became a business owner in the 70s, eventually building a successful drywalling company with the support of his sons, known as Triple L Acoustics and Drywall. He continued managing the business until the very end, a true testament to his work ethic and dedication.

He was a kind, thoughtful, and generous man, but also strong, intelligent, and hardworking. He had a natural way with people and was deeply loved, one of those rare individuals who seemed to know everyone and was genuinely liked by all. You could usually find him in one of three places: sitting at the kitchen table working alongside his wife, Susan, catching up over coffee at Tim Hortons with “the guys,” or on a job site.

Naturally curious and sharp-minded, he loved learning and challenging himself in both big and small ways. He was an avid reader of nonfiction and biographies, always eager to understand how things worked and how people built their lives. That same quick mind kept him happily occupied, mastering his handheld Tetris time and time again.

He loved meeting friends for coffee, sharing meals out in town, and following sports, especially UFC & the Edmonton Oilers. Family was always at the centre of his life. Over the years, he employed many family members in his business, eager to support and include them. Every Christmas, he delivered turkeys to extended family, a tradition that perfectly reflected his generosity. He adored his grandchildren and spoiled them without hesitation, and he took equal joy in his great-grandchildren, always adding new treasures to the toy chest he kept at his home.

He will be sadly missed by his wife Susan; his children Sam (Rose & her 3 daughters), Sandra (Craig), and Stacy (Kathy); his grandchildren Amber, Tara, Tom, Cody, Christy, Hayley, Brittany, Shantel, Niomi, and Nikita; his 17 great-grandchildren; his brothers Charlie and Larry; and many extended family and friends. He is predeceased by his son Steven, his great-grandson Mason, his parents, in-laws, brothers, sister, and friends.

If you knew him, you knew there were few things he disliked more than being the centre of attention. Therefore, at his very adamant request, there will be no service.
