Obituary For Annemarie Henning

It is with heavy hearts the family of Annemarie Henning, announce her passing on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at the Grande Prairie Care Centre at age 91.5 years.

She was first placed at the QEII Hospital in 2013, then moved to the Centre in 2014. The family sends a heartfelt thank you to the staff and residents of the GPCC, for their love and care of our mother/grandmother for the last 7 years.

Anne was born in a mill house on the grounds of Schloss Tambach in Germany on March 26, 1930. She spent a few years working in Frankfurt, Germany, when she and five girlfriends decided to travel to Canada. Arriving by ship in Halifax, NS, in 1958, the group took the train across Canada and arrived in Vancouver, BC. Anne and another friend decided to stay while the others returned to Germany. She worked at the YWCA learning to read and write English through reading the newspaper and talking with people.

It was in Vancouver where she met Emil Henning, and the two were married in 1960. He swept her off her feet and soon they were headed to Saskatchewan for a few years. In 1968, they purchased their farm in the Silverwood area just south of Rycroft, AB. After Emil passed in 2004, Anne continued to live on the farm - the place she loved most in the world. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many. She loved discussing anything from farming to politics. She was an amazing cook, gardener (vegetables and flowers), and had a strong work ethic; something one needed to help run a farm. Her typical attire was cut off pants, rubber boots, bailer twine in her hair and her dentures in a cup on the kitchen counter.

Anne made many trips back to Germany after Emil passed, enjoying visits and reconnecting with family. In 1991, she became a Canadian citizen, a very proud moment in her life.

She is finally at peace after her journey with dementia, it may have stolen the life she knew, but it didn’t change the love her family had for her. At the GPCC, her ability to scoot around in her wheelchair was something to behold as was her love for Debbie’s singing and guitar playing.

Left to mourn this wonderful woman are: daughter Christine; son Barry; grandchildren Adam and Katherine; son in-law Chris Neilsen; Anne also leaves sister in law Ethel Miller and numerous nieces and nephews in Canada. In Germany she is survived by her brother Werner Bruckner, his wife Gitti and daughter Ute, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Anne was predeceased by her parents, brothers, only sister, husband Emil and infant daughter Louise Ethel.

Due to COVID-19, there will be no service at this time. We are planning to inter both Mom and Dad at Northmark Cemetery in spring of 2022.

“There are so many lives she touched in a positive way. So many memories that bring a smile and show the wonderful person she was. So many stories how she made a difference or made someone’s day. So many hearts that are feeling sadness Because she was here - because she was loved.”
