Obituary For Angelina Hazel Crerar

Angelina “Angie” Hazel Crerar (née Mercredi), resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away on January 9, 2026, in Grande Prairie, at the age of 89 years.

Angie was born in Fort Resolution, NWT, on July 3, 1936, to Rose and Stan Mercredi and was the middle child of eight siblings. Angie was raised in Rocher River and Fort Resolution before entering residential school for eight years. She married her first husband in Yellowknife, NWT, and had seven children.

In 1965, Angie moved to Grande Prairie with her children and had three more children. During this time, she met the love of her life, Doug. Angie and Doug were foster parents for over 15 years to many children. One of the last to be fostered, they could not let go of, who in turn became the eleventh child.

Angie pursued her post-secondary education later in life and obtained several certificates and recognitions in the humanitarian, health, and human services fields. She received numerous awards, including the Governor General of Canada Award, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee and Platinum Medals, and the King Charles III Coronation Medal. Of these, her most cherished experience was meeting Pope Francis in person at the Vatican in 2022. It was this event where our Mother reconciled with her residential school experience when she received an apology from the Pope, and she now rests in peace.

Angie will be sadly missed by her children, Bonita (Howard) Nowell, Kenneth (Cheryl Belcourt) LaFleur, Judy (Barry Newbury) Salter, Patsy (Daryll) Charles, Roni (Lance) Bourque, Shayne (Cherry) LaFleur, Janis (Bob) LaFleur-Miller, Audrey (Gregg) Cockrill, Lorna (Kevin Barber) Crerar, Brenda (Rod) Crerar-Lowen, and Elton (Amber) Knudsen; 23 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Rita Mercredi.

She was predeceased by her husband, Douglas John Crerar, and her grandson, Krystopher Kyle Tosczak.

The wake will be held on Friday, January 16, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 107 Ave). The traditional Métis/Catholic funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bowes Event Centre in Grande Prairie (10017 99 Ave). Following the service, interment will take place at the Grande Prairie Cemetery (84 Ave and 112 St). After the interment, friends are invited to join the family for a luncheon back at Bowes.

Memorial donations may be made to the Elders Caring Shelter in Grande Prairie (e-transfers can be sent to: eldergp@telus.net).

We deeply regret that Carol and I will be in Calgary, where I am meeting at a college to start an Indigenous Studies course in the next few months. I think Angie will like that. We are happy that her reconciliation work has been successful, and she can rest from her many labours for others. But we will miss her, and keep her memories that we have close. Love to you all in that big family! Duff and Carol

It is with heartfelt condolences to Angie's family that I offer prayers with respect and honor for a truly dignified, resilient and matriarch who touched many lives. She was a mentor, guide and Auntie (when being an Auntie wasn't as cool!) who generously shared her opinion and words of wisdom. I was lucky enough and am forever grateful for her guidance and love over the many years of our friendship. She will be missed and forever remembered. Rest in Paradise my dear friend Angie. God speed.
