Obituary For Alice Patricia Band

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Alice Patricia Band (née Henning) on October 26, 2025, at the Grande Prairie Care Centre. Alice left this world peacefully at the age of 98, surrounded by family and loved ones, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and artistic spirit.

Alice was born on April 15, 1927, in Lorlie, Saskatchewan, and moved shortly after to Grande Prairie, Alberta, where she was part of a family of eight. One of six siblings, with two brothers and three sisters, her family provided her with a nurturing environment filled with laughter and playful competition, which contributed to her sharp wit and great sense of humor. In her younger years, she was training to be a nurse before contracting tuberculosis. While convalescing in Calgary, Alberta, with her sister Millie, Alice met Edgar Band, whom she later married. Together, they built a life filled with companionship for 48 years until his passing.

Alice was a remarkable woman who wore many hats. Beyond her home life, she was deeply involved in the arts community, gaining recognition as an avid and talented painter. Her works often reflected her profound love of nature and her appreciation for the unique beauty found in the world around her. She was especially fond of sunflowers, poppies, and unusual plants, which frequently appeared in her art and her cherished garden. Additionally, Alice always had dogs around until she entered the Grande Prairie Care Centre. Ice cream was often on her dogs’ snack menu.

Her sense of humor was one of her most endearing qualities. Alice had a talent for finding joy in life’s simple pleasures and enjoyed sharing clean jokes that could bring a smile to anyone’s face. Her laughter was infectious and brought warmth to all her social gatherings.

Alice is survived by her beloved sister, Jean Jones, and her sister-in-law, Margaret Henning, who were her lifelong friends and confidantes. She leaves behind her two dedicated sons, Tim (Colleen) and Danny (Laura), who were her pride and joy. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren, Tim, Kari, Nicole, and Ryan, as well as ten great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in her heart.

Alice was predeceased by her parents, Velvia and Leonard Henning; her dear husband, Edgar Band; her brothers, Max and Jim Henning; and her sisters, Marie Gross and Millie Donaghy. Though her family and friends mourn her loss, they celebrate the remarkable life she led and the memories she created.

To honor Alice’s life, a funeral service will be held on Monday, November 10, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Oliver’s Funeral Home (10005 107 Ave, Grande Prairie). Interment will follow at the Grande Prairie Cemetery (84 Ave and 112 St). Following the interment, friends are invited to join the family for a luncheon in Oliver’s Tea Room.

In lieu of flowers and in her memory, the family encourages donations to local arts programs, Bandaged Paws (https://bandagedpaws.org/donate), or the Alzheimer Society of Canada (https://alzheimer.ca/en), ensuring that her legacy of creativity and love for nature and animals continues to inspire others.

The family wishes to acknowledge with heartfelt thanks the staff at the Grande Prairie Care Centre, where Alice was a resident for nine years.

Alice Patricia Band will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her laughter, kindness, and artful spirit will continue to brighten our lives through our cherished memories.
